Recently there has been many Japanese RPGs for the PlayStation Portable and I’m positive that we’ll see more of them soon enough. Besides Final Fantasy there’s one more interesting RPG series that is being published by SEGA. Of course, we’re talking about Phantasy Star series that was created in 1987 for Sega Master System. The game was revolutionary because it has introduced us with a leading female protagonist and with advanced graphics for 1987. Over the years we have seen many sequels for all sorts of platforms and PlayStation Portable isn’t an exception. We have already seen Phantasy Star Portable in early 2009 and it’s time for a sequel so this means that we might get the Phantasy Star Portable 2 pretty soon.
Story in Phantasy Star Portable 2 takes place after three years from events that occurred in Phantasy Star Universe. As you know all four races have defeated SEED but there’s a new issue in the universe. Resources in Gurhal are getting low and therefore Gurhalians have decided to move to outer space. Player takes place as one of the members of private military group known as Little Wing on Clad 6 and this is where the story begins.
Like in the previous games on the beginning you create your own characters. You can choose several options such as gender, facial features, body and voice. One interesting thing about Phantasy Star Portable 2 is that you’ll be able to transfer the character from Phantasy Star Portable. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to input entire character with its level and equipment but you’ll be able to import its original appearance and name. This is great feature because it will make you feel like you’re a part of a story.
Phantasy Star Portable 2 will offer several new interesting features. First new feature is entirely new and deep storyline, that will provide you hours of fun. On the other side, Phantasy Star Potable 2 will provide Ad-Hoc and Infrastructure online support so this means that you’ll be able to enjoy dungeon crawling with up to four friends over the internet. In addition, Phantasy Star Potable 2 will feature improved combat system, new weapons and new customization features.
Since Phantasy Star Potable 2 is action RPG gameplay reminds us a lot of Kingdom Hearts. In order to attack you just need to press the Square button and you can even perform simpler chain attacks that way. If you want to make powerful attack you’ll have to use the Triangle button. Triangle button unleashes a powerful attack that consumes your Photon Points. As for the Photon Points they are not assigned to your weapons anymore, instead they are assigned to your character and they will regenerate over time. Interesting thing is that you can also use two swords and perform some nasty combos that way as well. As for combat, most enemies can be defeated easily simply by tapping the Square button while bosses will require certain tactic. Boss fights look impressive especially if you manage to level up your character to a higher level. Combat is filled with flashy effects and animations that look breathtaking on the PlayStation Portable. As for the bosses and storyline, before each mission you’ll see a screenshot of a character that will explain you the current objective. It’s nothing special but next to the outstanding and flashy combat it looks shallow in a way. So far, there’s not much information about the storyline but it is certain that co-op provides the best gaming experience when it comes to the Phantasy Star Potable 2.
Phantasy Star Potable 2 looks promising enough and with the amazing combat and interesting character creation it will surely provide you hours of fun. Add amazing co-op to all of this and you’ll get one solid action RPG experience that will keep you occupied for a long time. As for release date, we’re hoping to see Phantasy Star Portable 2 on September 14.
