When it comes to the platform action games one game has invented the entire genre and that game is Prince of Persia. Prince of Persia started as a 2D platform game and it was rather hard when it was released. Game featured all sorts of traps that you needed to avoid in order to get to the end of the level. Game took its place in dungeons and every trap was deadly and it could have killed you in a matter of seconds.

However, Prince of Persia didn’t get much attention until the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Sands of Time brought a good platform game into the new and exciting 3D environment. New traps, new moves and new enemies made Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time one of the best selling games in the Prince of Persia franchise. Of course, there were many other Prince of Persia games and we’re waiting for the new installment with anticipation.
The latest game, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands takes place between the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones. Unlike the previous games, this one isn’t simply ported to PSP, instead it’s carefully adjusted so it can meet PSP’s hardware power. Some players might be disappointed because The Forgotten Sands has a bit different mechanics than the previous games. Unlike Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, this game isn’t in full 3D and instead it is using 3D characters that are moving in fixed environment. Maybe it could be described as the good old Prince of Persia but with the new and improved 3D graphics and action. Although this game isn’t all 3D it’s still perfectly adjusted for the PSP and its players and it provides smooth and simple action.
As for the story, story is a bit different than in other versions and this time you need to find the evil force that is responsible for the disappearing of the royal family and at the same time you have to release certain spirits. This time prince will join forces with female spirit called Helem that will help him on his quest. Halem looks like a firefly but she will give you powers that are similar to the ones that we’ve seen in Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. Simply Halem will target points of interest and you’ll be able to use your magic on them. Thanks to the magic, you can speed up or slow down the movement of the sand and certain traps. This means that you’ll be able to slow down the flow of sand and make it solid and use it as a platform. Also you can speed up sand and use it to avoid all sorts of traps, or simply you can slow down the traps and pass them. There are many possibilities and it’s up to you to find them all. Besides the traps and sand you can even slow down enemies which can be useful if you’re fighting against multiple enemies.

With the changed gameplay mechanics fighting is a lot simpler than before. You attack with the square button and if you time it right, you can even make combo attacks. Prince of Persia isn’t a slashing game, so you’ll have to dodge to survive the attacks. Dodging is simple and it is assigned to the circle button. You dodge by pressing a circle button while moving and you block simply by pressing the circle button. Circle button can be used for tossing enemies as well. You just need to jump on enemy’s shoulder with the X button and toss it by pressing the circle button.

Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands is still a hard game and you’ll still die often if you don’t time your jumps perfectly. Of course, there are fountains on which you can restore your health or get all sorts of health upgrades. In addition, fountains are used as checkpoints so if you die enough times you’ll be taken to the last fountain.
Overall, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands is a good game, mechanics are a lot simpler, combat is smoother but it’s still a hard game. With the new mechanics it’s not good or hard as Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, but it’s a still a great game for all the Prince of Persia fans.
