When it comes to role-playing games I’ve seen many of them on the PlayStation Portable and despite the PSP hardware capabilities there are many great RPGs on this handheld. Speaking of great RPGs one game got my attention recently and that’s Persona 3. If you don’t know Persona franchise has started with a Revelations: Persona that was released in the 1996 for the Sony PlayStation. Interesting thing is that Persona franchise is actually a spinoff of the Megami Tensei series that is actually based on novel. As you can see, entire franchise has deep history but I’m not here to write about the entire history of the franchise, I’m here to write about the latest game of the series that is called Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 Portable.

As mentioned before Persona 3 is a part of a bigger role-play franchise developed by Atlus. Interesting thing about Persona 3 is that it is available for both PlayStation Portable and the PlayStation 2 but as we find out PlayStation Portable version is going to feature new interface designed for PSP, new female protagonist, new story elements and music.
As for the story in Persona 3, story is about high-school students that investigates bizarre events. Apparently, you’re not alone in this game and you’ll have certain allies that will help you during the battle with monsters known as Shadows. In order to fight the Shadows each student can summon a powerful being Persona that represents the inner self. Interesting thing about Persona series is that students summon Personas by using a gun-like item that is called Evoker. This game provides classical RPG experience but besides that Persona 3 is using certain elements from simulation games, so you’ll be progressing through each day in school and make new friends that will power up your Persona.
First thing that will be changed for the PSP version is the lack of free roaming mode. You’ll be able to roam in certain sequences with your teammates but in most cases you’ll move by moving a blue orb and highlighting the points of interest. This is a faster way to move but some fans will miss the free roaming feature. Besides free roaming huge part of the game are social interactions. The more friends and social connections you have more powers will your Persona get so it’s crucial to make as much friends as you can in this game. Each social connection might increase your skill so it’s crucial to work on them as much as you can. In addition, there are more changes as well. For example, there are no animated cutscenes so you’ll have to get used to that. Interesting thing is that we’re going to see two new difficulty levels in this game. Game already has three difficulty levels and two new levels are Beginner and Ultra-Hard. All difficulty levels work the same and only difference is the amount of damage that you give and receive. In addition, we should see part-time jobs in Persona 3 that will allow us to earn money and get certain traits increased. Biggest change this game is that we’re be able to control all characters separately during the battle like in Persona 4. There will be “rush mode” available as well that will allow you to focus only on your character while AI takes control of your teammates.

Overall Persona 3 looks promising enough. Although there are many things left out it still looks like it will be a great game for all the fans of the series. Currently there aren’t many information about this game but as we find out game should be released really soon.
